From simple to high-tech, explore ways you and your family can save water.

  1. Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pot of water:
    Instead of running the faucet to clean fruits and vegetables, use a bowl with water to soak them or reuse the water when you want to boil something or water inside plants.
     
  2. Use the same glass for water:
    don’t wash the glass out, reuse it for later.
     
  3. Use a plastic bowl when washing and rinsing dishes and then use that water to water plants.
     
  4. Reuse your cooking water by saving the water you cooked with, you could reuse it again.
     
  5. Grab a wrench and fix that leaky faucet. It’s simple, inexpensive, and you can save 140 gallons. Check the washer (rubber ring inside of the faucet) and replace if needed or use plumbers to secure the leak.
     
  6. Teach children to turn off faucets tightly after each use:
    By showing children how to turn off the faucet properly we could help teach them how to save water properly.
     
  7. When you give your pets’ fresh water, use their old water to rinse off patio, porch or sidewalk if you need use water instead of a broom or use it to water outside plants.
     
  8. Energy Star dishwashers use about 4 gallons of water per load, and even standard machines use only about 6 gallons. Hand washing generally uses about 20 gallons of water each time.
     
  9. Composting eliminates the need for a garbage disposal (water waster) and adds water-holding organic matter to the soil.
     
  10. When ice cubes are leftover from your drink, don’t throw them out. Pour them on a plant.
     
  11. Every time you shave minutes off your use of hot water, you also save energy and keep money in your pocket.
     
  12. While the weather is heating up, store a pitcher of water in the refrigerator for drinking, so you won’t have to run the faucet to get a cold glass of water.
     
  13. Replace beef with chicken, 1 lb. per week can save over 62,000 gallons water and don’t run the tap to defrost foods, instead let it sit overnight in the fridge or use the microwave.
     
  14. Whether you are at a restaurant or at home, just fill your glass half way just in case you don't drink the whole glass.
     
  15. When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run. Fill one basin with wash water and the other with rinse water.
